Son of God

Is Jesus the Son of God?

Muslim: Let’s start from the Quran — it invites all people to come to a common word: “Come to a word that is common between us and you, that we worship none but Allah..” (Quran 3:64). So let’s reason together based on the Bible and logic.

Christian: But Jesus said, “I am the Son of God.”

Muslim: Yes, the term son of God is used in the Bible for many righteous people — it’s a metaphorical title (symbolic title), not a literal one. For example:

  • Adam is called son of God (Luke 3:38).
  • Israel is called God’s firstborn (Exodus 4:22).
  • David was called My son, today I have begotten you (Psalm 2:7).
So the phrase shows closeness to God, not divinity.

Christian: But Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)

Muslim: True, but read the full context — in John 17:21, Jesus prays that his followers “may all be one, just as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You.”
That means oneness in purpose, not in essence. Jesus wanted unity in faith and mission, not equality in nature.

Christian: But he said, “I ascend to my Father.”

Muslim: Yes, and look closely at John 20:17 — Jesus says: “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” That clearly shows he had a God, like every prophet. If God has a God, that means he’s not God himself.

Christian: But Jesus prayed to the Father — why?

Muslim: Exactly — the Bible shows that even Jesus worshiped God: “He fell on his face and prayed.” (Matthew 26:39). If Jesus prays to God, then who was he praying to? It shows submission — the essence of Islam (Islam means submission to God).

Muslim: So, Islam honors Jesus — not as God, but as a mighty messenger, the Messiah, born miraculously, and a servant of the one true God.
We believe in his message, but we worship only the One who sent him. That’s pure monotheism — the message of all prophets.

We Muslims believe, that Jesus was one of the mightiest messengers of God, that he was the Christ, that he was born miraculously — without any male intervention (which many modern-day Christians do not believe today), that he gave life to the dead by God’s permission and that he healed those born blind and the lepers by God’s permission. In fact, no Muslim is a Muslim if he or she does not believe in Jesus!
