International Day to Combat Islamophobia

A Call for Tolerance, Awareness, and Unity. Every year on March 15, the world observes the International Day to Combat Islamophobia — a day officially recognized by the United Nations to raise awareness about the rising threat of Islamophobia and to promote global values of tolerance, peace, and interfaith harmony.

A UN Resolution Born from Tragedy and Advocacy
The date was chosen in remembrance of the horrific terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, where 51 innocent Muslims lost their lives. In response to such tragedies and growing anti-Muslim sentiment worldwide, the UN General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution in 2022, calling for March 15 to be observed annually as a day of awareness and action.

This resolution was spearheaded by Pakistan, with the support of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) — a clear testament to Pakistan’s commitment to confronting Islamophobia on the international stage.

Pakistan’s Leading Role on the Global Stage
Pakistan has consistently raised its voice at global forums to highlight the dangers of Islamophobia. It has urged the international community to recognize that Islamophobia is not just a form of prejudice — it is a modern manifestation of racism that threatens global peace and social cohesion.

Through its diplomatic efforts, Pakistan has advocated for a worldwide understanding of Islamic values, and the need to respect religious diversity, especially in the face of growing hate speech, media bias, and the criminalization of Islamic practices in some parts of the world.

A Day for Dialogue, Not Division
March 15 is more than a symbolic date. It is a call to action for governments, media, civil society, and individuals to stand against discrimination, marginalization, and hate crimes targeted at Muslims. It is a time to reflect on how freedom of expression can coexist with mutual respect, and how policy-makers can build bridges rather than barriers between communities.

Pakistan has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue among civilizations and has urged the global community to foster interfaith understanding to prevent extremism on all sides.

Why This Day Matters
Islamophobia is not limited to hate crimes — it includes negative stereotypes, policy discrimination, surveillance of Muslims, and media misrepresentation.

This day encourages public discussions, educational campaigns, and community events to promote the true values of Islam — mercy, peace, justice, and coexistence.

It’s also a moment to show solidarity with Muslim communities who continue to face prejudice and violence in various parts of the world.

Join the Movement
The International Day to Combat Islamophobia is a global reminder that hate has no place in any society, and that peace is only possible when we uphold the dignity of every faith and every individual.

Let us support this initiative, raise awareness, and work together to make our world safer and more inclusive for all — regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background.
